General Assembly of the United Nations announced that starting 2017, February 11th of each year is “International Day of Women and Girls in Science” to urge women to equally participate in the education, training, employment and decision-making processes in the field of science, eliminating all discrimination against women. Fisheries and Fishing Port Affairs Management Office, New Taipei City Government (hereinafter referred to as the Office) and Biomimicry Taiwan have cooperated since 2020 to hold “Biomimicry Global Design Challenge: Taiwan Competition” and set up awards and prizes exclusively for New Taipei City to build a stage for youngsters to create biomimetics and provide a channel for them to participate in international competitions. The off-stage promoter of all this is Jia-Chun Jiang, the secretary-general of Biomimicry Taiwan, who is an example of women participating in science education.

Before working for Biomimicry Taiwan, Jia-Chun Jiang, the secretary-general of Biomimicry Taiwan, served as public relations manager of Agri-Dragon Biotech Co., Ltd. and helped the company research and develop a Taiwan’s innovative technology farming system. She was inspired by the vigor and vitality of rain forests and the wisdom of mothers nurturing lives. Without pesticides, fertilizer and weedkillers, crops, fruits and vegetables can still flourish. It not only maintains production capacity, but also restores soil fertility. This all attributes to the wisdom of Nature. When she had an opportunity to have exchange with professors of National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, she comprehended that this technology was the application of biomimetics and began becoming interested in biomimetics.
To promote the application of biomimetics, Agri-Dragon Biotech Co., Ltd. in 2014 proposed to co-organize International Biomimicry Forum, and public relations manager Jia-Chun Jiang invited Ms. Janine Benyus, international biomimicry master, to deliver a speech on the forum. Ms. Benyus shared successful examples of biomimicry around the globe, and she thought Taiwan has rich ecological conditions, so it is suitable to develop biomimetics. She hoped that enterprises and the academic circles can actively participate in biomimicry and apply it to industries. Therefore, at the end of 2014, Biomimicry Taiwan was founded, and Jia-Chun Jiang served as secretary-general to handle affairs of the organization and take charge of “annual forums,” “Biomimicry Global Design Challenge: Taiwan Competition” and other important projects.

The Office indicated that following the international trend, the power of women has stood out conspicuously in different fields in Taiwan. For example, secretary-general Jiang of Biomimicry Taiwan who is an expert in biomimetics contributes selflessly in the circles of biomimetics, enabling Taiwan’s young students to show their talent on the international stage through “Biomimicry Global Design Challenge: Taiwan Competition.” Last year, 200 youngsters participated in “2021 Biomimicry Global Design Challenge: Taiwan Competition.” This year, we welcome teams to sign up for “2022 Biomimicry Global Design Challenge: Taiwan Competition” to help solve the problems of fishery, traffic, marine environment and the development of traffic and cities by integrating Taiwan’s original biomimetics into diverse fields.

Registration Date: Starting today until mid-May, 2022
