High-quality Gongliao abalone grow in breeding ponds with clear and clean water quality in the intertidal zone in Gongliao District, New Taipei City. Additionally, aquaculturists take good care of abalone and regularly dive to check their growth to look after Gongliao abalone, special guests from the ocean.

Shu-Gen Zhang, an aquaculturist, stated that Gongliao abalones are bred in breeding ponds in the intertidal zone. They like to hide under rocks in the ponds and eat gracilaria and seaweed. Therefore, aquaculturists have to dive to check the environment of ponds and the growth of abalone and observe the amount of bait left at the bottom of ponds on a regular basis for the breeding management of Gongliao abalone. In the process from putting baby abalone (shells approximately three centimeters long) in ponds to breed to harvesting grown abalone (shells six centimeters long or over), aquaculturists have to do quite a few breeding management tasks in addition to regularly diving to check their growth and controlling bait. For example, they have to regularly dive to stir hidden rocks at the bottom of ponds to avoid excess accumulation of deposits between rocks. Additionally, they use water pumps (like vacuum cleaners) to suck and remove deposits to prevent the deterioration of quality of the bottom to enable Gongliao abalone to grow rapidly in a good living environment. Occasionally, predators (such as starfish, crabs and octopuses) of Gongliao abalone swim into breeding ponds in the intertidal zone, so aquaculturists have to remove these predators as soon as possible to avoid casualties. Thanks to numerous tasks that aquaculturists do, great quality Gongliao abalone can be harvested.

Wen Lee, Commissioner of Agriculture Department, indicated that to guide Gongliao abalone aquaculture industry in New Taipei City, New Taipei City government has entrusted National Taiwan Ocean University with investigations into Gongliao abalone industry. The university surveys the aquaculturists of Gongliao abalone with questionnaires and interviews them to comprehend the current situation of aquaculture and the needs of aquaculturists on a regular basis for the management of Gongliao abalone industry and the promotion of policies.
