With a history of early development, the port has its construction divided into two stages, which were invested by the Joint Commission on Rural Reconstruction and City government since 1957. In recent years, some small construction projects including ship lifter, port dredging and facilities repair were completed.
Vessels of Maoao are mostly engaged in inshore fisheries including gill net, stick-held dip net, long line, and pole and lines boots in oceans around Guishan Islet and Sandiao Bay.
Most of the vessels travel forth and back within a day and their catches are mostly Butterfishes, Bigfin reef squid, neritic squid, skipjack tuna, lobster and miscellaneous fishes.
