[New Taipei City News] Every time the Northeast monsoon arrives at the New Taipei City coast, it brings not only the coldness, but the prosperous breath of life. The breeding season of Taiwan Abalone in the New Taipei City Gong-Liao Marine Resources Rehabilitation Park starts from each October to the February next year, during which the staff would select the Taiwan Abalone which are raised for over 2 years and with fully functioning gonad as breeding shells for reproduction. During this time, if you make a reservation of guided tour in the park, you will have the rare chance to see the Abalone babies that are attaching to the plastic boards in the breeding pool! Schools and large groups are welcomed for registration (Registration Website: goo.gl/F96hyB)!

The technic of the rehabilitation park, Zhou Lin-Xing said that in the past when the artificial breeding technique of Taiwan Abalone wasn't mature yet, the staffs thought the night time was the best time for breeding. Therefore, they often finished the complicated procedure of breeding before the dawn and saw the beautiful sunrise of the Northeastern Coast after work. Later on, the breeding technique was stabilized: if the water temperature changes up to 3-5 degrees, the abalones would start to discharge seminal fluids and eggs. Hence the breeding tasks can be proceeded during the day, which elevates the working efficiency.

The discharged semen and eggs will be collected by staffs and then inseminated according to certain ratio. Once the embryos developed, they will be carefully transferred to the breeding pools. The just hatched abalone babies are shell-less; they will drift in the water for 2-5 days, and when they grow the tiny shells, they will attach themselves on the hanging plastic boards in the pool, and be fed with the micro algae on the plastic boards. At this time they are very small and hard to find with naked eyes. The small abalones bred by the park will gradually grow under the delicate care of the staffs, and be released in the next June in the Gong Liao Mao-Ao Bay Aquatic Animal and Plant Breeding and Conservation Area, allowing the species of Taiwan Abalone to continue, and simultaneously resupply the ocean resources.

Administrator of Agriculture Bureau, Li Wen stated that in order to enrich the ocean resources of New Taipei City, Gong-Liao Marine Resources Rehabilitation Park would perform breeding of Taiwan Abalone yearly in October. And then in the next June when the shells of abalones grow to 2-3cm, the staffs would cooperate with local elementary students to release the baby abalones into the New Taipei City Mao-Ao Bay Aquatic Animal and Plant Breeding and Conservation Area. They hope that through the breeding, cultivation, and release of Taiwan Abalones, they can not only resupply ocean resources, but implant the concept of conservation into the minds of the younger generations.
