Here Comes the First Pot of “Black Gold” at the Northern Coast
[New Taipei City news]
At the beginning in early December this year, waves of cold currents have kept hitting Tamsui and Jinshan at Taiwan’s northern coast, and a large number of mullets have come accordingly. Based on the statistics released by the landing declaration, more than 60,000 mullets have been captured so far, which has enabled fishermen in Tamsui and Jinshan to gain an extra pot of gold before the Lunar New Year. However, despite the atmosphere of delight, the New Taipei city government calls for fishermen not forget to fill out the “Landing declaration” when entering the port and jointly shoulder the responsibility for fishery resources protection and sustainable development of fisheries.

Agriculture Department, New Taipei City Government said that the fishery operations management and sustainable use of resources should be on the basis of clear catch data so as to grasp the fishing situation timely and take relevant measures of conservation management in time. According to the information reported at present, there have been about 30 ships operated in the northern coast recently, mainly off the coast in Tamsui and Jinshan. In addition, the price of mullets is approximately NT 250-350 per tail, and the mullet fishing season is estimated to continue till mid-January. Working fishermen should abide by “The regulation of declaration management for landing declaration”, fill out and submit “Landing declaration” when the ships arrives into the port to make catch information more accurate.

The mullets are migratory fish whose habitat ranges from the East China Sea to the Taiwan Strait, and their spawning ground is in Taiwan’s southwestern coast to the south of Hsinchu. After hatching from eggs, the mullets swim to the sandy seabed or estuary of mainland China to live and grow. Every winter, mature mullets float to the surface of sea from the seabed of the Yangtze River estuary and migrate along the southwestern coast of Taiwan. As the mullets have high value, if fishermen go fishing for mullets and get a good harvest, they can enjoy a happy New Year. Moreover, ten days before and after the winter solstice each year is the best harvest period when the mullets are fresh and delicious. Therefore, there are the sayings “It is the best time to eat mullets in winter” or “The mullets are tasted better than chicken.”

Agriculture Department, New Taipei City Government stated that because of many customs and taboos derived from the lack of mastery in marine weather and fishing information in early times, people relied on the help of unknown forces particularly. That is, fishermen should inquire gods for the test fishing date and course in advance, then going fishing merrily with setting off fireworks and burning joss money at the same time. After the mullet season, fishermen had to worship gods. Moreover, in some fishing huts whose harvest was good, there would be playhouses set up for performances to thank gods.

The Director General of Agriculture Department Li Wen hopes that fishermen can load their ships fully with catches and have a great Lunar New Year during the period of mullet season; on the other hand, reminds the fishermen to fill out the “Landing declaration” when entering the port so as to reflect the operation situation precisely through the fishery information and work together for the sustainable development of fishery.[New Taipei City news]At the beginning in early December this year, waves of cold currents have kept hitting Tamsui and Jinshan at Taiwan’s northern coast, and a large number of mullets have come accordingly.
