In addition, the price of mullets is approximately NT 250-350 per tail, and the mullet fishing season is estimated to continue till mid-January. Working fishermen should abide by “The regulation of declaration management for landing declaration”, fill out and submit “Landing declaration” when the ships arrives into the port to make catch information more accurate.
The mullets are migratory fish whose habitat ranges from the East China Sea to the Taiwan Strait, and their spawning ground is in Taiwan’s southwestern coast to the south of Hsinchu. After hatching from eggs, the mullets swim to the sandy seabed or estuary of mainland China to live and grow. Every winter, mature mullets float to the surface of sea from the seabed of the Yangtze River estuary and migrate along the southwestern coast of Taiwan. As the mullets have high value, if fishermen go fishing for mullets and get a good harvest, they can enjoy a happy New Year. Moreover, ten days before and after the winter solstice each year is the best harvest period when the mullets are fresh and delicious. Therefore, there are the sayings “It is the best time to eat mullets in winter” or “The mullets are tasted better than chicken.”
